What is Toughened Glass?

This glass can be categorized as one of the safety glasses since it is created to enhance the safety of users. It is also known as tempered glass About half of all automotive glass manufactured is laminated glass. It is treated by heat or chemicals control methods in order to make it stronger in comparison with normal glass. Tempered or Toughened glass can withstand heat up to 250 degrees Celsius making it safer. This glass is mainly applied to doors and façade, staircases, partitions and windows.

What is difference between Normal Glass or Toughened Glass?

Tuffen glass is a high strength product that is upto five times stronger than normal glass. As it does not break easily if it does defiitely not into sharp pieces like regular glass. Normal glass also known as a annealed glass

Manufacturing Process

  1. Heating: The glass is heated to around 620–700°C (about 1,148–1,292°F) in a tempering furnace.

  2. Quenching: After heating, the glass is rapidly cooled with jets of cold air. This creates compressive stresses on the surface, increasing its strength.

  3. Annealing: After the quenching process, the glass may undergo a brief annealing phase to relieve internal stresses.

Benefits

  • Enhanced Strength: Toughened glass is typically five to seven times stronger than standard glass of the same thickness.

  • Impact Resistance: It can withstand significant impact without breaking, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.

  • Thermal Shock Resistance: It can endure sudden temperature changes, which is beneficial in environments with fluctuating temperatures.

  • Safety: As mentioned, when it breaks, it shatters into small, less dangerous pieces, minimizing the risk of serious injuries.

  • Energy Efficiency: Toughened glass can be used in double-glazing systems, which improve insulation and energy efficiency.

APPLICATIONS-

  • Architectural : Facades, partitions and glass roofs.
  • Automotive : Windshield and side windows.
  • Furniture: Table tops and shelves.
  • Security and Safety Area – Whereby more strength is needed
Toughened glass is a “good all-round performer that has become one of the most popular products both for residential and commercial applications”.

Things to know about: Toughened glass

Tempered glass needs to be cut to the desired size or shaped before the tempering process begins, as it cannot be altered afterward. Any edge polishing or hole drilling must be completed prior to tempering. Due to the balanced stresses within the glass, any damage to a section can lead to the glass shattering into small, thumbnail-sized fragments.
