What is Heat Strengthened Glass?
Tempered glass is a heat strengthened glass enhanced by heating the glass to a temperature which is slightly above its annealing point then slowly cooling it. This process increase the strength and durability of the glass that is produced. In heat-strengthened glass, the process goes through, they heat it to a temperature of about 700 degrees Celsius. It is heated to this extent in order to then cool it with a view of enhancing its strength and the aspect of structural integrity. Heat-strengthened glass cannot be cut or drilled after heat strengthening it and any work such as edge grinding, sandblasting or acid etching will hasten the failure of the product.
Characteristics of Heat Strengthened Glass
Characteristics | Description |
---|---|
Strength | Heat strengthened glass is twice strong as compared to annealed glass of same size |
Thermal resistance | Heat strengthened glass has high thermal strength |
Surface Quality | Heat strengthened glass has a better surface quality than tempered glass |
Uses | Heat strengthened glass is often used in curtain wall facades of buildings |
Chemical Property | Heat strengthened glass maintains its chemical properties after heat treating |
Heat strengthened glass offers several benefits Here are some key advantages:
Increased Strength: The heat treatment process increases the glass’s strength, making it more resistant to impact and thermal stress compared to normal glass.
Thermal Resistance: It can withstand higher temperatures and rapid temperature changes without breaking, making it suitable for applications where thermal fluctuations occur.
Safety: While not as safe as toughened glass, if heat strengthened glass breaks, it tends to shatter into larger pieces rather than small shards, reducing the risk of injury.
Lighter Weight: This glass can provide strength while being lighter than other forms of strengthened glass, which can be beneficial for structural designs.
Design Flexibility: It can be used in a variety of architectural and design applications, including windows, facades, and balustrades, while maintaining clarity and aesthetic appeal.
Cost-Effective: Compared to fully tempered glass, heat strengthened glass can be a more economical option while still providing many of the benefits of strength and durability.
These qualities make heat strengthened glass suitable for both residential and commercial applications, especially in areas where safety and durability are priorities.
