What is Bullet Proof Glass?
Bulletproof glass, also known as ballistic glass, bullet-resistant glass, security glass, safety glass, or armored glass, is a transparent material that`s designed to resist penetration by projectiles. It’s made from multiple layers of different materials, including glass, acrylic, and polycarbonate
How Bullet Proof Glass Works?
Bulletproof glass works by using multiple layers of material to absorb the force of a bullet and slow it down, often stopping it before it fully penetrates the glass
Bullet-resistant glass is made by layering laminated glass. The greater the number of layers, the higher the level of protection it provides. To reduce weight, polycarbonate (a type of thermoplastic) is added to the safe side to prevent spall. The goal is to create a material that looks and feels like regular glass while offering reliable protection against small arms.
- Laminated polycarbonate– This type of glass is created by stacking polycarbonate and acrylic panes with an adhesive film in between. The layers are then vacuum sealed and heated in an autoclave to fuse them together.
- Polycarbonate– This clear thermoplastic is commonly used as the inner layer of bulletproof glass due to its ability to absorb and dissipate energy from high-velocity impacts.
- Laminated glass- Also referred to as safety glass, this is produced by placing a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between two or more layers of glass. The PVB layer helps prevent the glass from shattering upon impact.
- Acrylic- This material is more affordable than polycarbonate but is also less durable. It is flexible and can be cut to various sizes for installation.
- Glass-clad polycarbonate- This option offers greater resistance to the elements and is easier to clean compared to polycarbonate or acrylic. It is an excellent choice for outdoor settings.
Composition-
Layers- Bulletproof glass is composed of several layers of glass and plastic. The exterior layers are crafted from toughened glass, while the inner layers utilize polycarbonate or laminated glass. This blend enables the glass to absorb and distribute the energy from a bullet.
Thickness- The thickness of the glass changes depending on the desired level of protection. Thicker glass is necessary for higher levels of security.
Applications
- Bank Tellers and ATMs: Protect against robberies.
- Military and Law Enforcement: Used in armored vehicles and secure facilities.
- Retail Stores: Especially those dealing in high-value items.
- Private Residences: Increasingly used in high-security homes.
